The company was founded in 1926, by Messias Baptista, who kept the administration of the company until 1973. The administration of Caves Messias is still today, ensured by descendants of the family Messias. Since the foundation Messias has produced and marketed wines from the main demarcated regions: Dão, Bairrada, Douro, Vinho Verde, Beiras and Port Wine.

The company is also recognized for the high quality of its Natural Sparkling Wines and Spirits.
