Description
Two Hanseatic traders, Jean-Henri Schÿler, originally from Hamburg (1708 – 1776) and Jacques Schröder (1691 – 1755) from Lübeck, jointly founded the company which still bears their name located on the Quai des Chartrons in Bordeaux. It traded in colonial commodities such as indigo, spices, sugar, coffee, tea and oils from Santo Domingo and the West Indies to be shipped to the leading ports of Northern Europe. Transiting through the port of Bordeaux, the ships were loaded with barrels of Bordeaux wine, and returned from the Baltic ports with cargoes of oak staves for the production of barrels.
