Ogier the Dane is a legendary character said to have fought alongside the Emperor Charlemagne in the late 8th century. It is believed that he stopped off in the Massif Central after a battle in the Basque Country and made the Rhône Valley his home, bringing the name Ogier to the region. In 1859, Antoine Ogier established his wine business in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
