Already belonging to the annals of the region, and going throw is third century, the “Quinta do Bucheiro”, owned by Maria da Conceição, granddaughter of Dr. Joaquim Pinheiro de Azevedo Leite Pereira, who in the nineteenth century supported by the most notable French researchers, such as Pladom, Lichamstei and Saliman, started a valuable research about the Phylloxera, a blight that decimated almost entirely the Douro Vineyards. As a result from that research “Quinta do Bucheiro” introduced the use of american vine roofstock. Therefore, the Douro Region organized a tribute to this man, promoted by the Douro Museum due to is outstanding contribution in order to find the antidote for this wine disease that in the last decades of the 18th century had wiped out almost completely all the vineyards, throwing the wine-growers in misery. Adopted the designation of Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial Quinta do Bucheiro, Lda, while remaining faithful to its principles.
