Description

Wine produced in the Bairrada region. It presents a deep ruby colour, with an intense and complex aroma, predominantly notes of plum, sultanas, dried figs, and blackberries, involved by pleasant nuances of oak wood. In the mouth it reveals an excellent structure and a good balance, it has round tannins and a great taste persistence.

Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that, at first, was dedicated to marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs.

What is now the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, began marketing Bairrada table wines in the 1930s, with the ban on producing port outside Vila Nova de Gaia.

Thus, at the end of the 1950s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region was born, Frei João and, later on, the brand Porta dos Cavaleiros, in the demarcated region of Dão.
