The winery Dona Paterna, by Carlos Alberto Codesso, is located in Quinta da Carvalheira, in the center of the parish of Paderne, near the village of Melgaço. It is close to the old Monastery and its ancient Romanesque church, which is a national monument. An old historical tradition says that the said Monastery of Paderne was founded in the 10th century by D. Paterna, married to Count D. Hermenegildo, governor of Tui (Spain) and sister of the famous Saint Rosendo of the Order of the Canons of St. Augustine. Hence the name of this parish and, in its memory, the name of this wine. Carlos Alberto Codesso, from a very young age became interested in viticulture and, encouraging his father, Manuel Francisco Codesso, started the Alvarinho plantations in 1974 in the driving system used at that time (cruzeta), passing later, with him at the head of the to use the simple drawstring system. After many years of contact with vineyards and winemaking, the accumulation of experience during all this time was the "cornerstone" for the creation, in 1990, of Alvarinho Dona Paterna wine brand. The vineyards are located in the sub-region of Monção-Melgaço, which has a unique micro-climate in the world. This is why it is also called Alvarinho wine region, which, due to its unique characteristics, is also called "king of vinho verde" this sub-region is inserted in the region of vinho verde wines.
