One of the great ambassadors of Portuguese wine, Mário Neves embarked after almost 40 years of experience in an innovative personal project named Nelson Neves, named after his father. A descendant of one of the founders of the Aliança Vinhos and currently its export director, "The Lord of the Wine", as Mário is known in Portugal, he was thrown off breaking the tradition of Bairrada - leaving aside the ubiquitous Baga grape - to bet in Merlot-based Bordeaux-based Bordeaux wines. The "adventure", as Mario Neves himself defines this project, is the result of an old will. His father was the first viticulturist to plant the Merlot grape variety in Bairrada. And when he visited the region, the French mediatic winemaker Michel Rolland was surprised by the quality that the French grape is capable of reaching on Bairrada soil. In fact, the Bairrada and Bordeaux have some elements in common: the proximity of the Atlantic and clay-limestone soils.
