2016 Senhor Doutor Touriga Nacional red
Description
Senhor Doutor Touriga Nacional is a surprising wine, with a broad and complex aroma of black fruit compote, enveloped in floral notes of violet and bergamot. On the palate, it is voluminous and concentrated, without losing its liveliness, freshness and elegance, with polished tannins, well-integrated wood and a long and persistent finish.
The Senhor Doutor wines, developed in Herdade da Maroteira with grapes from Évoramonte, result from a small selection of Vinhos de Autor and a partnership between owner Philip Mollet and winemaker António Maçanita.
This Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels and is robust and structured. It's a wine rich in ripe fruit, with undeniable complexity and lively, intense aromas of bergamot, black fruits, liquorice and discreet notes of leather. In the mouth we find perfectly integrated wood, lots of freshness and elegance.
Herdade da Maroteira is located at the foot of Serra D'Ossa, and spreads over 540 hectares, owned by the same Anglo-Portuguese family for 5 generations, since the mid-19th century. At that time, Robert Reynolds invested in the Alentejo cork oak forest to meet the needs of the Port Wine industry in northern Portugal, and for some 150 years, the focus of the estate's production was cork and cattle. It was not until the year 2000 that Philip Mollet, the current owner and manager of the estate revolutionised the estate's strategy and planted vines. Since then, the estate has produced excellent Alentejo wines based on the preferred grape variety, Syrah.
The vines are spread over the 15 hectares planted on clay-limestone soils, giving the wines the genuine character of the Alentejo.
