Mário Neves, one of Portugal’s foremost wine ambassadors, launched the Nelson Neves project as a tribute to his father. Breaking away from Bairrada’s winemaking tradition, he embraced a Bordeaux-style approach, with Merlot – the first grape variety his father planted in the region – taking centre stage. His bold decision proved successful, even impressing renowned French oenologist Michel Rolland, who recognised the grape’s remarkable potential in Bairrada’s terroir. Influenced by the Atlantic and characterised by clay-limestone soils, Nelson Neves wines offer a refined and distinctive expression of the region.
