Description

A Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has come a long way, establishing itself as one of the most innovative wine producers in Portugal. The company's activity began by producing wines with grapes from the Palmela region. During the '80s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal began its expansion, acquiring properties throughout the national territory, creating new paradigms of quality wine production.

The Quinta da Terrugem located in Alentejo, in the parish that gives its name, in the municipality of Elvas, was acquired in 1991. It has about 60 hectares of vineyard planted with the varieties Aragonês, Tinta Roriz, Trincadeira, Castelão, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Alicante Bouschet.

During the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal began its expansion, acquiring properties throughout the national territory, creating new paradigms of quality wine production.

Situated in the Douro, which is the oldest demarcated region in the world and has been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, Quinta dos Quatro Ventos looks like a huge Japanese sand garden, with a symbolic dovecote lost in the immensity. The land on this century-old farm was part of Quinta das Figueiras - now Quinta do Vesuvio - which belonged to the Conde da Lapa. Around 1890 it was bought by the then Magistrate of the Realm, Dr. José Maria Saraiva de Aguilar, when he was the Royal Procurator in S. João da Pesqueira. His descendants kept the property until 1996. Three years later the 150 hectares of Quinta dos Quatro Ventos were acquired by Aliança (which now belongs to the Bacalhôa group), for the production of Douro wines. In 2001, Aliança changed the name of the Quinta, known as Quinta de Porto de Bois, as it is located in Porto de Bois, to Quinta dos Quatro Ventos, due to the fact that the property has a concave configuration that is propitious to develop strong air currents in all directions.
