2021 Degrau do Combro red
Description
The Degrau do Combro red is a true Douro wine, made from grape varieties planted in old vines that convey the identity and tradition of the region. It is vinified in granite lagars with foot treading, respecting ancestral methods, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, maintaining the full expression of the terroir. The fermentation continues in stainless steel tanks with temperature control, ensuring freshness and balance, before aging in French oak barrels, where it gains structure and depth. In the glass, it reveals complexity and depth, with notes of ripe fruit, spices, and well-integrated tannins, culminating in an elegant and persistent finish.
With over 160 years of tradition in the Douro, the Cálem family has wine in its DNA. For four generations, they produced Port Wine at the historic A. A. Cálem & Filho, Lda., until its sale in 1997. Today, the passion remains alive through José Maria Cálem and his son Duarte, who continue the family legacy into the fifth and sixth generations.
The vineyards, winery, and family home are located in Vilarinho de Cotas, Alijó, just a few kilometres from Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro. The terroir is characterised by old vines planted in small terraced plots, narrow levels supported by schist walls, where dozens of mixed grape varieties grow, as dictated by the tradition of ancient winemakers.
Here, viticulture is entirely manual, preserving the authenticity and diversity that make the Douro one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world.
