Description

The “Vinho dos Mortos” tradition originated in Boticas, Trás-os-Montes, in 1807 during the Peninsular War. To prevent French troops from looting their wine, locals buried the bottles. When they returned, they expected the wine to be spoiled, but instead discovered it had improved. The underground environment, dark and with constant temperature, created ideal conditions for aging. Since then, this unique method of burying wine for 1 to 2 years has given Transmontano wines their distinctive flavors and aromas.
