By 1995, the Álvarez family had already embarked on their foray into the world of wine, underpinned by the experience and successful evolution of the group's pearl, Vega-Sicilia, and with their new project, Alión, already underway. It was time to broaden their horizons. Once the decision was made, they set things in motion and began buying whatever old vines were available, choosing the desert of San Román de Hornija, a rocky area formed by the deposits of the Duero since time immemorial.

During the next four years, several production experiments were carried out to discover the potential of Toro wines. After this challenging experiment was completed, the conclusion was reached that this is a style of wine where the most important aspect lies in the conservation of the grape's fruity profile. The entire process of making and ageing the wine is focused on its conservation and, at the same time, seeks to give it the maximum elegance possible in a region as austere as Toro.
