Herdade Paço do Conde dates back to the 14th century, is referred to as far back as 1378, in the early days of the kingdom of Portugal. The Herdade extends over 4000 hectares, where a large part of it is located between the remains of an ancient Roman castle by the Guadiana and the ancient Roman town of "Vilares".
The properties of this Herdade have been in the possession of the Castelo Branco family for more than three centuries, and the current management belongs to José António Ferrão Castelo Branco, Luís Miguel Ferrão Castelo Branco and Maria Luísa Castelo Branco Schmidt, grandchildren of the founder.
The Herdade's 4000 hectares are exploited for different purposes, from the production of grapes for wine to olive groves, cereals, sown, and natural pastures for cattle and black mountain pigs, among other agricultural activities. The continuity of the farm and the development of the winery and mill are essential components of this project.
