2019 Sparkling Wine Caves São João Homenagem a Luiz Costa Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Brut Nature

A sparkling wine of great elegance and complexity, expressing the character of Bairrada with precision. Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Caves São João Homenagem a Luiz Costa Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Bruto Natural follows the traditional method, with a second fermentation in bottle and extended ageing on the lees, giving it texture, finesse and depth.

Straw yellow in colour, it reveals a complex aromatic profile, marked by notes of citrus peel, dried flowers, subtle toast, butter biscuit and beeswax. On the palate, it stands out for its fresh attack, excellent texture and creamy mousse, with good persistence.

Established in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that, at first, was dedicated to the sale of fine Douro wines and liqueurs.

What is now the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, started, in the 1930s, with the ban on producing port outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines.

Thus, at the end of the 1950s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region was born, Frei João and, later on, the brand Porta dos Cavaleiros, in the demarcated region of Dão.
