Founded in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine producers to venture into Marlborough. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place for wine production, but Cloudy Bay's founder, David Hohnen, was convinced of its potential to produce excellent wines and invested in the region's best vineyards.
Since then, Marlborough has become New Zealand's premier wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world. The producer's name refers to 1770 when Captain James Cook's journey to New Zealand coincided with floods in the region. The large amount of sediment carried into the sea made the water opaque, leading the bay to be cleverly named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook himself.
