The noble Bosq family began cultivating their vineyards in 1365, and the property was acquired in the 18th century by the Scottish George Smith, who gave it his name. After the acquisition, the wine began to be exported to England in their own ships, gaining fame in this way.

In 1842, Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux and an enthusiastic winegrower, inherited Château Smith Haut Lafitte from his mother and elevated the wine to the level of Grand Cru Exceptionnel. Years later, the wine distribution company Louis Eschenauer decided to purchase the property in 1958.

Decades later, the Cathiard family fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte, eventually acquiring it in 1990. Their excellent tradition was maintained, and the motto of this family is "to do everything possible to ensure that each harvest of red and white wine is worthy of our magnificent terroir."
