The first documented reference to Herdade de Espirra is due to José Maria dos Santos, former owner and a visionary Portuguese farmer responsible for planting, at the end of the 19th century, in the region of the Setúbal Peninsula, the largest contiguous vineyard planted in the world, 2400 hectares in total, which, unfortunately, later, in 1872, was destroyed during the Phylloxera period and therefore reconverted into forest crops.
The current owner of Herdade de Espirra, Portucel, acquired the property in 1985, having restructured the existing vineyard and recovered the social facilities which were in frank disrepair, including the winery itself, thus providing the conditions for wine production to be undertaken with great rigour and professionalism. A new company then emerged, Sociedade de Vinhos da Herdade de Espirra, whose aim is to produce and market the Espirra wine, respecting the traditional cultures and practices of the region.
