Carcavelos region, demarcated in 1908, is located very close to the mouth of the Tagus in the Parishes of S. Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the Municipality of Cascais and part of the Parish of Oeiras in the homonymous county.
The fame of Carcavelos wines is lost in time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them on his Oeiras estate, appreciated them so much that King José I gave them to the Beijing court in 1752. Wine production was for centuries the most important economic activity in the Parish of Carcavelos. Its secular name, quality and typicity were recognized by Law in 1908.
