2023 Barroca da Malhada white
Description
Barroca da Malhada white is a blend of Arinto, Fernão Pires and Bical, made from hand-harvested grapes and crafted using an artisanal approach, with spontaneous fermentation and low intervention in the cellar. The wine was aged for eight months across different vessels: stainless steel (80%), first-use Portuguese oak barrels (10%) and amphora (10%). Fermentation took place at low temperatures, with regular bâtonnage and extended ageing on fine lees.
It shows a lemon-yellow colour. On the nose, it reveals notable richness and complexity, with primary fruit to the fore, followed by subtle toasted notes from the barrel and a delicate earthy character from the amphora. On the palate, the acidity stands out for its vibrancy and precision, with the different layers of flavour perfectly integrated, giving the wine a gastronomic, structured and remarkably balanced profile.
Barroca da Malhada is an artisanal wine producer from Beira Interior, rooted in a historic estate dating back to the Middle Ages, once owned by the Viscounts of Tinalhas. With around five hectares of vineyards farmed organically and following biodynamic practices, the estate works schist-sandy soils of granitic origin in one of Portugal’s most mountainous regions. The wines reflect a low-intervention approach, favouring authenticity, freshness and a true expression of place.
