2011 Pétrus red
The most expensive wine in the Bordeaux region had very humble beginnings. Compared to the best Bordeaux wines in the Médoc, it is also a relatively new producer, although research shows that the oldest records on the history of Pétrus date back to the mid-1750s, also making it one of the oldest established estates in Pomerol.
Jean-Francois Moueix and his descendants are the owners of Pétrus today. When Jean-Pierre Moueix passed away in 2003, his eldest son of the same name took over Pétrus, while, Christian Moueix, his other son managed the production. Thus, in 2005 Pétrus benefited from a renovation and modernisation of its cellars. The next chapter for the Pétrus story opened in 2008, when 33-year-old Olivier Berrouet replaced his father as winemaker and director of Pétrus.
Today, the Pétrus vineyard contains about 11.5 hectares, planted only with the Merlot grape variety. However, during the 1990s and into the 2000s, about half the hectares were planted with Cabernet Franc, which was not always used in Pétrus' vintages. So in 2010, the vineyard underwent a renovation, with the hectares of Cabernet Franc vines being replaced by Merlot, and it is now the only grape variety used in what they call Bordeaux's best wines.
