Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is located in the most picturesque corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley. The name means "Boekenhout's ravine" (pronounced Book-n-Howed) because of the indigenous Boekenhout tree, which is highly prized in woodworking. Since 1993, the estate has been restored and a new vineyard planting programme has been established, including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Sémillon and Viognier.

Specialising in the production of wine from the Syrah variety, Boekenhoutskloof is famous for its wine The Chocolate Block, a Syrah-based blend, which is an unparalleled success in South Africa.
