In 1849 Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau, established their distillery in Angers in France. They aimed to take advantage of the quality of the local fruit to produce a good distillate. After several trials and experiments, it was in 1875 that they finally launched a distillate made with orange peel in a square, amber-coloured bottle: Cointreau was born. This perfect marriage of sweet and bitter orange peels defines the characteristic taste of Cointreau. Properly selected orange peels are thoroughly dried, macerated and finally distilled in polished copper stills to extract every drop of the precious oils.
