Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, is located very close to the mouth of the Tagus in the parishes of S. Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais and part of the parish of Oeiras in the municipality of the same name.
The fame of Carcavelos wines is lost in time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them on his farm in Oeiras, appreciated them so much that King José I gave them to the court in Beijing in 1752. Wine production was the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos for centuries. Its centuries-old name, quality and typicity were recognised by letter of law in 1908.
