Villa Oeiras
The enhancement of historical, cultural and wine-growing heritage of CarcavelosVilla Oeiras
The enhancement of historical, cultural and wine-growing heritage of CarcavelosVilla Oeiras is a project promoted by the Municipality of Oeiras dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the heritage associated with the historic fortified wine of Carcavelos. Based at the former Quinta do Marquês de Pombal, the project aims to revive the region’s winemaking tradition, ensuring high standards of quality throughout all production processes. Villa Oeiras thus establishes itself as the guardian of a unique and iconic wine, whilst promoting the enjoyment and appreciation of this cultural and oenological heritage.
Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, is located very close to the mouth of the Tagus in the parishes of S. Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais and part of the parish of Oeiras in the municipality of the same name. Currently, the Carcavelos Demarcated Region is one of the smallest Portuguese Designations of Origin, alongside Colares.
The fame of Carcavelos wines is lost in time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them on his farm in Oeiras, appreciated them so much that King José I gave them to the court in Beijing in 1752. Wine production was the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos for centuries. Its centuries-old name, quality and typicity were recognised by letter of law in 1908.
