Madeira Rum, commonly known as sugar cane brandy, is a rum with Protected Geographical Indication, produced in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, obtained exclusively by alcoholic fermentation and distillation of sugar cane juice, and is therefore classified as agricultural rum, presenting unique quality and characteristics, the result of traditional production processes and experience accumulated over generations.
On the north coast of Madeira, in the village of Porto da Cruz, we find the North Mines. The Porto da Cruz mill is one of the three old mills operating in Madeira.
Built in 1927, as a result of the merger of some of the fifty or so existing on the island at the time, it still uses the machinery of that time, and is the only one in Europe to use steam as its driving force.
