The name Robustus pays tribute to Dirk Niepoort's first wine, the 1990 Robustus, which never came to market.
Since 2004, Robustus has been vinified according to the methods used in traditional winemaking. The long ageing in old wood barrels lends maturity, complexity, softens the tannins, and gives the wine a unique precision and balance, without losing all its vigor and aromatic freshness.
Currently, Robustus comes from our oldest, north-facing vineyards, where acidity and tannic structure are high.
