José Maria Cálem
Combro, a family legacy in the heart of the DouroJosé Maria Cálem
Combro, a family legacy in the heart of the DouroWith over 160 years of tradition in the Douro, the Cálem family has wine in its DNA. For four generations, they produced Port Wine at the historic A. A. Cálem & Filho, Lda., until its sale in 1997. Today, the passion remains alive through José Maria Cálem and his son Duarte, who continue the family legacy into the fifth and sixth generations.
The vineyards, winery, and family home are located in Vilarinho de Cotas, Alijó, just a few kilometres from Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro. The terroir is characterised by old vines planted in small terraced plots, narrow levels supported by schist walls, where dozens of mixed grape varieties grow, as dictated by the tradition of ancient winemakers.
Here, viticulture is entirely manual, preserving the authenticity and diversity that make the Douro one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world.
