Fonseca Guimarãens 2008 has a very deep purple-black colour, with violet reflections. The first impression on the nose is of an explosion of blackberries, cassis, strawberries and forest fruits. These exuberant berry fruit aromas are tempered by notes of coffee, molasses and spices and enveloped by a fragrant balsamic aura of cistus flower and mint. The palate is represented by a tight, closed fabric of tannins. Long finish, with ripe berry fruit flavours. Nuts are an excellent accompaniment to this Vintage, as are blue-veined cheeses and other intensely flavoured cheeses. Dried fruits, such as apricots and figs, also harmonise very well.
Fonseca has been part of the first category of Vintage Port wine producers since the mid-19th century. Fonseca Vintage Port wines are known for their lush fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age. Their wines appeal to the enthusiast and connoisseur, perhaps more than the Vintage Ports of any other house because they are the result of inspired production and deep knowledge of viticulture and terroir.
